On February 7, 2017, the Sarnia Police Service responded to a holdup alarm at Localender Plus located in the area of Confederation Street and Lansdowne Avenue, in the City of Sarnia, at approximately 10:30 am.
Officers immediately contained the scene around the business and began a search for the suspect. According to the clerk, the suspect alluded to possibly having a gun and told the clerk to hand over the money. He was wearing a hoody and a toque to conceal his identity. After having stolen a quantity of cash the suspect fled the scene.
As officers continued to canvass the area, members of the Sarnia Police Service came across a 28 year old male who was in the area of Lansdowne Ave and Confederation Street, at approximately 12:40 pm. The male initially gave a false name but the officers were able to determine his true identity and that he was wanted on an outstanding warrant for breach of probation. As the officers attempted to arrest him a struggle ensued as the suspect attempt to flee. Police were able to restrain the suspect and place him under arrest. He was subsequently transported to the Sarnia Police Station.
As members of the Criminal Investigations Branch continued to receive information about the robbery and the suspect it was determined that the 28 year old who had been arrested earlier for the outstanding warrants and resisting police was also the suspect who committed the robbery.
Currently Jonathan Hughes, 28 years of age, is in custody and is awaiting a bail hearing for the following charges:
11 counts of Breach of Probation
Resist Peace Officer
Possession of a Controlled Substance (Hydromorphone)
Robbery with Violence
Disguise with Intent
Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000
Mischief Under $5000
Assault with a Weapon
