Driver Arrested While Impaired by Drugs and also Charged with Drug Trafficking Charges

On Saturday, October 21, 2017, at approximately 8:45am, the Sarnia police Service received calls from witnesses regarding a male party that maybe under the influence of alcohol or drugs and was attempting to enter a vehicle and drive away. The vehicle was in the area of Kember Drive and Willa Drive. Further information received indicated that the driver left the area and he was driving erratically, almost causing a head on collision on Exmouth Street.

An officer, on patrol, was able to locate the vehicle in the area of Exmouth Street and Copland Road at which point an attempt was made to stop the vehicle. As the vehicle started to pull over it was observed mounting the curb and then finally pull off the curb before coming to a stop. The only occupant of the vehicle was the 28 year old male driver from Sarnia. As the officer interacted with the driver he observed signs of what he believed to be impairment. Also, as the officer looked into the vehicle he observed various pieces of drug paraphernalia such as a syringe and a medical tourniquet.

At approximately 9:00 am the driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle by drugs.

Secondary to a search of the accused along with the immediate area around the accused in the vehicle, various drugs were located.

The following drugs were located: 2 grams of suspected heroin, a small brick of suspected heroin that weighed 10.5 grams, 0.7 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 135 grams of suspected cannabis marihuana, 15 grams of suspected cocaine, a vial of cannabis oil, a quantity of unknown pills, and approximately $1400 in cash.

The total street value of the drugs seized is approximately $6700.00.

Also located on the accused’s person was a spring loaded 4 inch knife which is a prohibited weapon.

The suspect was transported to the station and evaluated by the Sarnia Police Service Drug Recognition Expert.

The 28 year old accused is now facing the following charges:

  1. Driving while ability impaired by drugs

  2. Possession of a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine)

  3. Possession of a Controlled Substance (other drugs)

  4. Possession of a Controlled Substance for the purpose of trafficking (Cannabis Marihuana)

  5. Possession of a Controlled Substance for the purpose of trafficking (Heroin)

  6. Possession of a Controlled Substance for the purpose of trafficking (Cocaine)

  7. Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon

  8. Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to a Prohibition Order

The accused was subsequently held for a bail hearing.
