Driver Attempts to Flee From Police

On November 21, 2021, at approximately 2:50 AM, an officer on patrol observed a motor vehicle traveling eastbound on Richard Street approaching Stuart Street. The vehicle failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection and turned left onto Stuart Street. The vehicle proceeded northbound on Stuart Street failing to stop at another stop sign at the intersection of Stuart Street and Telfer Street and proceeded through the intersection at a high rate of speed.

As the officer was about to stop the suspect vehicle it pulled into an address on Stuart Street. The officer activated the cruiser’s emergency lights and parked the cruiser at the end of the driveway. As the officer approached the driver’s side window he observed that the driver was still present in the vehicle and noted the driver was looking directly at him. The driver did not open his door or window and nor did the suspect follow any of the instructions delivered by the officer.

The driver then began to back out of the driveway and when realizing that the cruiser was there, cranked the wheels to vehicle to the left to drive out across the lawn to flee from police. At this point the officer was required to maneuver himself and take action to avoid being struck by the vehicle as it fled away. As the vehicle drove across the lawn, it tore up the grass causing ruts to the ground.

Fortunately, the officer was able to take down the licence plate number and attended the address to which the vehicle was registered to. The vehicle was located at this address which was in the 100 block of Forsyth Street. Officers attended the residence and located the driver. Without any further incident, the suspect was taken into custody and held for a bail hearing.

The accused in this matter, Andrew Lloyd Durston, 29 years of age, faces the following charges:

1) One count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle

2) One count of flight from a peace officer

3) Failing to comply with a release order

4) Failing to comply with probation order

5) Mischief under $5000

Durston remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing
