Individual Charged in Failing to Take Care of Pets

On April 19, 2021, the Sarnia Fire Department responded to an apartment fire in the 500 block of London Road. The fire was extinguished before significant damage could be done.
As Sarnia Fire was clearing the apartment they came across a dog that was deceased in its steel cage. The bottom of the cage was covered in feces and dog fur and there was no food in the cage.
Also located in the apartment was a cat that was emaciated and lethargic. Again the litter box was full of feces and there was no food available for the cat. The cat was delivered to the Humane Society to be cared for.
Police were contacted to investigate this matter. It was determined that the dog had passed away prior to the fire and according to neighbours the resident, of the unit, had not been seen for a month.
Officers were able to determine who was renting the unit and responsible for the pets and on April 20, 2021, at approximately 2:10 PM, a 20-year-old male, from Sarnia, was arrested. He was taken into custody and charged with two counts of causing damage or injury to an animal by failing to provide suitable/ adequate food, water, care, or shelter (Criminal Code of Canada 446(1)(b)).
The accused has since been released and will have his first court appearance on July 6, 2021, at 9:30 am, at the Sarnia Lambton Court House located at 700 North Christina Street, Sarnia.
