Sarnia, Ontario: The Sarnia Sting, in partnership with Imperial Sarnia Site are proud to announce the winners of The Extra Mile Contest. This was a three-week campaign in search of Sarnia-Lambton community members who have gone the extra mile to help others during the COVID19 pandemic.
Kevin Allen of Sarnia won in the adult category. A professional chef, Kevin and his wife Jan ensured that local seniors and those most vulnerable in our community would not go hungry. To meet this significant need, Sarnia Blessings was created. This is an outreach program where hundreds of meals are made and delivered every week at no charge to those in need. Kevin does the shopping and cooking while Jan organizes the meal recipients and schedules the volunteer drivers. Local businesses, churches and other groups have generously helped Sarnia Blessings with funding and deliveries. To date, over 22,000 meals have been delivered across Sarnia-Lambton.
As The Extra Mile winner, Kevin received a $2000 Esso gift card and two Gold Sarnia Sting season tickets once the team returns to live action. Kevin, who was nominated by his peers, says the news couldn’t come at a better time, “The Esso gas card will definitely come in handy for our meal deliveries. Thank you to those who nominated me as well as the Sarnia Sting and Imperial Sarnia for this wonderful gift.”
The Extra Mile youth winner is Kaleb Orrange, ten, of Sarnia. Kaleb has proven you’re never too young to help make a difference. After learning that more families were struggling to put food on the table, Kaleb came up with an idea to create and sell holiday ornaments. With some help from his mom, he partnered with a local business to sell over 330 ornaments and donated over $1100 to the food bank. For his efforts, Kaleb has won a customized Sarnia Sting jersey and two Gold Sarnia Sting season tickets.
“There were so many worthy nominations that we received. We want to thank all the nominees and everyone who has gone the extra mile to help others get through the pandemic. Sarnia-Lambton is filled with wonderful people like Kevin and Kaleb, and that’s what makes this such a great community to call home,” says Sting Marketing Director Jake Bourrie.
