A young offender was recently charged by Sarnia Police for Mischief Endangering Life after throwing an object from an overpass onto the 402 Highway.
On November 3rd, 2021, the Sarnia Police Youth Bureau Division began investigating an incident involving a young person throwing a bicycle wheel onto Highway 402 from the Murphy Road overpass. Although the highway was active at this time, thankfully a collision did not occur and fortunately no one was injured as the bicycle tire rolled off the shoulder of the highway.
On November 18th, 2021, as a result of this investigation, a young male was arrested and charged accordingly.
The Sarnia Police Service received 2 similar complaints last month regarding objects being thrown off this same overpass onto Highway 402. The first incident occurred on October 17th, 2021 shortly after 11pm where a pipe was thrown from this overpass at a moving vehicle striking the front windshield. Just prior to being struck, the driver in this case observed a young male laying a section of drainage pipe on the right eastbound lane which then forced the driver into the passing lane. After being struck by the pipe, the driver observed 3 young teenage boys walking away on the overpass.
The second incident occurred approximately two 2 hours later where a truck driver had to swerve to avoid hitting a shopping cart lying on the eastbound lanes of Highway 402, which was believed to have been thrown from the Murphy Road overpass. Luckily, in both of these incidents, neither driver was injured although the outcomes could have been devastating. Lambton OPP assisted Sarnia Police with these investigations although the individuals responsible have not yet been located.
It goes without saying that the consequences from engaging in this irresponsible act are severe for the accused and potentially fatal for victims. Law enforcement agencies take these matters very seriously.
Please think before you act and never engage in this reckless behaviour.
Anyone with information on any of these incidents is asked to contact Detective Constable Nick Mclean at 519-344-8861 extension 6214 or Sarnia-Lambton Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
