Suspect Attempts To Flee From Police Leads to Drug Arrest


On January 27, 2021, at approximately 3:45 AM an officer on general patrol had initiated the traffic stop of a vehicle in the 300 block of Confederation Street. The vehicle had pulled into a driveway when the officer had turned on his police cruiser’s emergency lights to stop the vehicle. The vehicle then reverses, nearly striking the front end of the officer’s cruiser. The suspect vehicle then continues to drive over the front lawn and fled westbound on Confederation Street.

The vehicle then began to accelerate away and made an abrupt right-hand turn onto Vidal Street heading northbound and nearly striking another police vehicle who was forced to manoeuver his vehicle to avoid a collision. Vidal Street is a one-way street that is only meant for northbound traffic where this occurred.

Officers were able to locate the vehicle in the area of Vidal Street and Wellington Street, abandoned, with the doors open, and the vehicle still running. In plain view the officers located a quantity of drugs on the floor of the vehicle.

Officers were able to follow shoe prints, that were very distinctive, from the where the driver exited the vehicle. Officers were able to track the suspect and located him hiding in the side yard of a residence situated in the 200 block of Christina Street South.

The following drugs were located inside the vehicle:

  1. Approximately 33 grams of cocaine

  2. 13 Tec tablets (opioid family of drugs)

  3. Four grams of fentanyl

  4. Two and a half grams of methamphetamine

The approximate street value of drugs seized is $5680.00

The accused, Eric Anthony Burgstaler, 31 years of age, of Windsor, was taken into custody without incident and is facing the following charges:

  1. Four counts of failing to comply with a release order

  2. One count of breach of probation

  3. One count of dangerous operation

  4. One count of operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited under the criminal code

  5. One count of flight from a peace officer

  6. Four counts of possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking

The accused remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
